Jutting very prominently into the eastern shore of the mighty Loch Eriboll is the craggy hammer-head tombolo of Ard Neackie, home to four well-preserved like kilns from the 1870s. The giant kilns here were used to burn quarried limestone at the time, and were subsequently used to store ammunition for the Royal Navy during WWII. The two pebble beaches either side of the isthmus are delightfully peaceful. A lone fisherman is sitting on a chair in a trench coat and hunting hat just staring out into the loch. He doesn’t move or look around as I pass by and he looks so totally at ease with his surroundings. I imagine he will be sitting here silently all day.
