1 October 2026

I’ve spent a lot of time over the course of this project up here on the Sutherland coast and my project has taken me to the beaches in the far northwest such as Sandwood Bay and Balkaniel, and  across most of the north coast from the Kyle of Tongue to Caithness. But that leaves a short ‘gap’ to the east of the Durness area which I am to fill today. I reach Durness before 9am just as the campers above the beach are beginning to wake, but the shore below is empty. I enjoy the impressive views across Sango Bay from the cliff top before climbing down to wander around the large rocks rising from the sand. I wonder why I’m the only person on the beach with so many camper vans parked up above. What do these people do?
