Of course you can walk easily between Lossiemouth’s two beaches but the most convenient access to West Beach is from the golf club on the extreme western edge of the town, so given the late hour I drive the few minutes to the car park to save time. Although it’s not as instantly attractive as East Beach, the curved bay becomes more picturesque and unspoilt as you head west towards the community-owned Covesea Lighthouse, built in 1846. The beach is notable for the WWII pillboxes and concrete defences that are evident in many Scottish beaches. I can’t explain the row of dozens of dead Christmas tried lined up near the gold club entrance.
