The spectacular white beaches of Barra come thick and fast as I make my north up the wild west coast. It’s now time to stop at the islands’s airport to visit two of Barra’s most popular beaches. Whilst much of the focus is the airport beach itself (Traigh Mhor), a short walk over the road to the west coast lies Traigh Eais, a spectacular mile-long stretch of beach with surrounding hills and some of the highest sand dunes you’ll ever see. Fully exposed to the Atlantic, this is surf city when the waves are up, but today it is calm and peaceful. This beach was one of the locations for the film Whisky Galore. This is definitely one to return to on another day as I’d like to walk the full length of the beach and explore the hills around. This time, I had to get moving so I followed a path back through a field to the airport, finding a lost mobile phone on the way and handing it in at the terminal (no takers). Someone was going to be mad.
