109. Balephuil Bay
15 May 2023
In the south west corner of Tiree we find Balephuil Bay (Traigh Bhi), with its huge rolling waves which draw surfers from all over the world. In fact, this beach is home to the annual Tiree Wave Classic world championship windsurfing event. A long rocky track leads through the cattle fields to a small car park at the back of the bay. About a mile wide, the beach is book-ended by high rocks, which make for a dramatic sight when the waves crash against them. The low lying beach maintains a sheen of seawater when the tide is out, causing impressive reflections of the clouds above. A very nice beach indeed.
