4. Mellon Udrigle
Three beaches into my trip to Wester Ross and the idea of a walking project dedicated to Scottish beaches is beginning to take shape. After the thrills of Slaggan Bay, I drive the few miles further up the road to the popular family beach in the tiny hamlet of Mellon Udrigle. After deserted Slaggan Bay, this feels like Brighton beach .. there’s at least 15 people here! I follow a short boardwalk to the pretty bay, potter around and then climb to a hilltop cairn with spectacular views over the sea to the Summer Isles. Apparently it’s not unusual to spot a submarine popping up around here because of the nearby naval base.
Revisit: 21st September 2024
On my return visit to Wester Ross, I check out of my hotel early to maximise the time on this beautiful Sunday morning. Just as I did five year’s ago, I drive straight to Mellon Udrigle for a short morning stroll before the hike to Slaggan Bay just down the road.
