5. Gruinard Bay
It’s time to head back to Inverness for the flight to Manchester. I’ve visited four beaches in Wester Ross and I’m hooked. My route back takes me past the expansive Gruinard Bay. There’s a spectacular viewpoint on the hill before the bay, but parking is easy by the roadside and I descend the wooden steps onto the beach. The tide is out, giving me the opportunity to round a rocky outcrop to a hidden sanctuary. It’s easy to see why this beach is so popular. I can’t stay too long, so I vow to return to this bay, and others in Wester Ross, another time. Wester Ross is where my journey started – the first beaches of the Project. They deserve another visit.
Revisit: 21st September 2024
Sticking to my vow from five years ago I return to Wester Ross on a beautiful weekend in September under cloudless skies. As I did last time, I choose to visit Gruinard Bay after a hike to Slaggan Bay, but unfortunately this time the tide is in and I am unable to explore this fine beach as widely as I could in 2019. I make do with a wander as far as I can, which isn’t far!
