The tiny village of Portuairk is the most westerly settlement on the British mainland and one of the most idyllic places I’ve ever visited. Following the track around the coast from glorious Sanna Bay, the first sight of Portuairk is from above a stunning white sand cove with turquoise water. A small road winds through the tiny settlement, with a few houses on one side and more sandy beaches and rock pools on the other. On my visit, I was knee-deep in new born lambs, which lay across the empty road staking their claim to the village. There were no other signs of life and it was a truly serene place to be on a sunny Spring day.
