From the southern tip of the island at Glencallum Bay, I followed the West Island Way northwards along a well-marked track until I joined a road at a farm. Passing new-born lambs in the fields and easing my way past Highland coos in the road, I followed the track to rejoin the West Island Way and head west towards lovely Stravanan Bay, which sits alongside the island golf course. The route literally skirts one of the holes and you are warned to be wary of flying balls. A light plane and a microlight took off and landed as I walked alongside the grassy air-strip, the pilots giving me a friendly wave. The beach itself is wide, with low dunes, golden sand and rock pools, and superb views over to Arran. Idyllic.
