From the southern tip of the island at Glencallum Bay, I follow the West Island Way northwards along a well-marked track until I join a road at a farm. Passing new-born lambs in the fields and easing my way past Highland coos in the road, I follow the track to rejoin the West Island Way and head west towards lovely Stravanan Bay, which sits alongside the island golf course. The route literally skirts one of the holes and signs warn of flying golf balls. A light plane and a microlight take off and landed as I walk alongside the grassy air-strip, the pilots giving me a friendly wave. The beach itself is wide, with low dunes, golden sand and rock pools, and superb views over to Arran. Idyllic. From here, I retrace my steps back past the airstrip and on towards Kilchattan Bay.
