As I worked my way clockwise up the west coast of Arran I was excited to stop at Machrie to visit the 2000-year-old standing stones at Machrie Moor. Following a pleasant 2km inland walk into the valley, the stones and stone circles that appear into view are truly stunning. You can feel the ancient history of this sacred place come to life. I’m so glad I made the detour from my usual beach walking. Anyway, back to Machrie and there are any number of stopping points where you can wander from the road onto the long sand and stony beach to enjoy the views over to Kintyre.
