Dominating the western coast of the Udal Peninsula is Traigh Iar, a 4km half-moon bay with white sand, high dunes and unbeatable views across to Taransay. I enter the beach from a small sandy cove at the north of the bay and follow the curved shoreline for about a mile before taking a sharp left through a gap in the dunes to pick up the path across farmland to the parking space at Grenitote, thus completing the superb peninsula circuit. This has to be one of the best walks I have ever done. Unfortunately, for the first and only time in my three day trip, a blanket of cloud has obscured the blue sky … but it is to return.
