It’s not long before I bring my Western Isles trip to a close as I return to North Uist from wonderful Berneray. The dark clouds are still present but harmless as I drive to the popular camping spot of Clachan Sands just south of the causeway between the two islands. It’s actually two expansive beaches, Tràigh Lingeigh and Tràigh Hornais, separated by a headland used for campers and motorhomes. I park up near the main road at Hornais cemetery and walk past an old burial ground to the central point between the two beaches. I have a choice to make, so I opt to go left and climb down onto Traigh Hornais for my last beach walk of the trip. This is a nice quiet spot to reflect on the many beaches of Vatersay, Barra, Eriskay, North Uist and Berneray I have had the pleasure to visit during these three sunny, dry and midge-free days. I walk back along the dunes to the car and off into Lochmaddy to find some lunch before my flight from Benbecula. I’ll be back to these stunning isles to visit the beaches of Lewis, Harris, South Uist and Benbecula. But that’s for another day.
