57. Traigh na Croise
Although I am about to spend two nights on South Uist, I’m not planning to visit any of the majestic white beaches which dominate the west coast of the island. These are for another trip. But when I arrive at the Polochar Inn, the setting sun is so intoxicating I decide to take a short walk (literally a few yards) to the beautiful beach opposite the inn. It’s one of the most spectacular late summer sunsets I’ve ever seen (and I’ve watched the sun go down over Uluru!). It’s magical to stand on the beach to watch the fading orb descend into the Sound of Barra. Also outside the hotel, and overlooking the beach, is the famous Poll a Charra standing stone, which dates to around 2000 BC. What a place to end the day. I intend to be back on another occasion to walk all the remaining beaches on the west coast of South Uist.
