126. Ardroil/Uig Sands
11 September 2023
When the tide is out, as it was on this day, the sands of Uig Bay stretch for miles and it feels like a vast desert out in the middle. It was truly magnificent to walk aimlessly, as I did, across the sands for what seemed like hours. I was reminded of Eoligarry on Barra, or parts of the North Norfolk coast at low tide. I parked at the Ardroil campsite in the south side of the bay, but there are many access points to the huge beach. It was here that the famous Lewis Chessmen were found in 1831 and a wooden monument to the discovery sits at the entrance to the beach road.
