196. Bay of Lopness
Sanday is a very welcoming island for visitors, with well placed information boards, picnic benches and superb signage. Driving along the road at the back of Lopness Bay towards the eastern end of the island, a well maintained parking area draws attention to the wreck of a German torpedo boat which came adrift after the scuttling of the German fleet at the end of WWI and which has sat in the bay since 1920. At almost high tide, only a small part of the wreck was visible today, but at low tide it is possible to walk out to the wreck. At this point, much of the beach is grey and stony, but pure white stretches and high dunes are found at either end of the bay.
