9 September 2024

After the thrills of Cata Sand, Tresness and Newark, Sanday had already left its mark on me, and it wasn’t even midday! The sun was shining but ominous heavy grey clouds were threatening to apply an unwelcome plot twist to the day as I headed to the island’s most easterly beach at Scuthvie Bay. A narrow unmade track leads towards the Start Point lighthouse until a sign warning of erosion signals the end of the road. A handy picnic bench marks an entrance to the southern end of the bay, with its dramatic dunes and white sand. We are now in remote territory, with the North Sea throwing everything it has at the beach.
