As the sun set on a full day’s beach walks around Caithness and Sutherland, I headed back to my hotel in Thurso, but I still had time for a quick stop at Sandside beach, a lovely bay bordering the Reay Golf Course. A small car park provides access to the beach through the dunes, and it’s a short climb down onto the sand, looking out to Sandside Bay and beyond. A sign on the path towards the beach warns that small radioactive particles have been found on this beach (presumably due to the nearby Dounreay nuclear power station) and so visitors are warned not to dig in the sand or take stones and shells home.
