176. Freswick Bay
I loved visiting this small sandy bay not far off the main A99 coast road but remote enough to be easily overlooked. A small track just before the settlement of Skirza leads down to a single parking spot, taken on this occasion by a small German camper van whose owner seemed surprised to see another human being when I wandered past. The beach itself is lovely, and dominated by the imposing Freswick castle at the southern end. The sand is gritty and grey, unlike the golden sand at Sinclair’s Bay further down the coast. A seal popped its head out of the water as I strolled past and watched me head towards the castle. A totally idyllic bay. Mr camper van had chosen a good spot.
