255. Breachacha Bay
This expansive beach at Breachacha (Gaelic for ‘beautiful field’) is dominated by two castles, an ‘old’ one from the 15th century and a ‘new’ one constructed in 1750 as a neo-Palladin mansion, which can be rented out for a holiday with a difference. They both provide a stunning backdrop to the wide, deep beach. I approach through fields and through a gap between some buildings onto the southern end of the beach. It’s deserted. I walk out onto the wide open bay, over to the far end and back to the old castle. I understand creative writing retreats are held here, and I can’t think of many places more inspiring. I spend some time here as this is the last beach of the day for me and just a short 20-minute walk back to the airfield for my Hebridean Air flight back to Oban. It’s been a superb day’s walking in this corner of a wonderful island. I shall return another day to explore the rest of Coll.
